About Author
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899 as the son of a doctor and the second of six children. After a stint as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, Hemingway came home to America in 1919, only to return to the battlefield - this time as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war - in 1922. Resigning from journalism to focus on his writing instead, he moved to Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with fellow American expatriates such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Through the years, Hemingway travelled widely and wrote avidly, becoming an internationally recognized literary master of his craft. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.
厄內斯特·海明威(Ernest Hemingway) 1899年出生于芝加哥。父親克拉倫斯·海明威是鎮(zhèn)醫(yī)院的一名外科醫(yī)師，厄內斯特·海明威是他的長子。1918年一次大戰(zhàn)末期，他以記者身份參加美國紅十字會的戰(zhàn)地服務隊，開赴意大利前線，直到停戰(zhàn)后才于1919年初帶著遍體傷疤回到美國。戰(zhàn)爭的殘酷恐怖同時在他的心靈深處留下了難以磨滅的創(chuàng)傷，也對他的文學創(chuàng)作產生了深刻的印象。他以長篇巨著《喪鐘為誰而鳴》贏得了世界聲譽，嗣后又在55歲時以一個不到六萬字的中篇小說《老人與海）壓倒所有候選的世界級文豪，獲得了1954年諾貝爾文學獎金，使他在世界文壇上的名望和地位達到了巔峰。1958年，海明威遷返美國愛達荷州療養(yǎng)，和高血壓、糖尿病等痼疾“搏斗”了將近三年。最終決心主動地擺脫病榻上的痛苦祈磨，在1961年7月用他心愛的雙管獵槍結束了自己的生命。
