“降級冥王星” 年度詞匯拔頭籌 [ 2007-01-09 15:43 ]
很難給語言下個準(zhǔn)確的定義,但有一點可以肯定,語言不是一成不變的教科書。新年伊始,美國方言學(xué)會選定“plutoed”(由“冥王星降級”,引申為“被貶、被降級”)為美國2006年度詞匯。

Friday.
To "pluto" is "to demote or devalue someone or something," much like what
happened to the former planet last year when the General Assembly of the
International Astronomical Union decided Pluto didn't meet its definition of a
planet.
報道指出,冥王星因在國際天文學(xué)協(xié)會大會上被認為不符合行星標(biāo)準(zhǔn)而遭降級,名詞“Pluto”(冥王星)由此被語言學(xué)家賦予了動詞涵義“降級、貶值”。相應(yīng)的,Pluto(降級、貶值)的過去分詞形式“Plutoed”則用來形容“被貶、被降級”。
看來,有失亦有得。冥王星雖在天文學(xué)界遭“降級”,卻不想“因禍得?!?,贏得了語言學(xué)一席之地。
