The swimming finals and much of the gymnastics at the 2008 Beijing
Olympics will be held in the morning, the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) said on Thursday in Beijing.
The competition schedule for the Games had finally been agreed by the
IOC's executive board "after a thorough consultation process", IOC
coordination commission chairman Hein Verbruggen said at a news
conference.
The team and all-round individual
events in the gymnastics are set for the morning, although
the individual apparatus
events will be contested in evening sessions.
All the track and field finals will take place in the evening with the
customary exception of the marathon.
The proposed morning shift for the swimming finals caused uproar when
the news was leaked earlier this year, with some swimmers accusing the IOC
of putting the interests of US broadcaster NBC before the needs of the
athletes.
"I would like to deny that we are doing the bidding of certain
broadcasters," Verbruggen said.
"It has always been like this, the schedule is always the result of a
thorough consultation process and what comes out of this is a compromise.
For example, in Seoul in 1988, many events were held in the morning.
"The impression being given is that this is a special case, this is not
true."

國(guó)際奧委會(huì)本周四在北京宣布，2008年北京奧運(yùn)會(huì)的游泳及大部分體操項(xiàng)目的決賽都將在上午舉行。

今年年初，美國(guó)國(guó)家廣播公司向國(guó)際奧委會(huì)提出將游泳項(xiàng)目的決賽改在上午舉行，這個(gè)消息在當(dāng)時(shí)引起軒然大波，一些游泳運(yùn)動(dòng)員指責(zé)國(guó)際奧委會(huì)置運(yùn)動(dòng)員的需要而不顧，只考慮轉(zhuǎn)播商美國(guó)國(guó)家廣播公司的利益。
維爾布魯根解釋說：“國(guó)際奧委會(huì)做上述決定并非只是考慮某幾家轉(zhuǎn)播商的利益?！?
“每屆奧運(yùn)會(huì)的競(jìng)賽日程安排都是全面協(xié)商、多方妥協(xié)的結(jié)果。比如，1998年漢城奧運(yùn)會(huì)的很多比賽項(xiàng)目就是在上午舉行?！?
“所以，2008年北京奧運(yùn)會(huì)某些項(xiàng)目的改時(shí)并不是特例。”
