近段，巴西總統(tǒng)盧拉著實公務(wù)纏身，既要列席8國首腦峰會，又要忙國內(nèi)的總統(tǒng)競選。在第一輪投票選舉中，盧拉僅以微弱的票數(shù)險勝頭號競爭對手艾爾克明。最后決勝選舉將在今年10月份進(jìn)行。

新聞中的runoff vote指“決勝選舉”，側(cè)重強(qiáng)調(diào)“具有決定性意義的選舉”。Run-off源于動詞詞組run off（進(jìn)行決賽），與play
off（決賽）相比，“run off”常用來形容“投票選舉”，而play off則用于“體育比賽”，請看下面兩個例句：
The short-listed candidates will run off for presidency on
Monday.（入圍的總統(tǒng)候選人將在周一進(jìn)行最后的決選。）
The losing semifinalists will play off for
third place.（半決賽淘汰下來的選手將再賽以爭奪第三名）。
另外，run off 還可以指“流掉，流出”?，F(xiàn)在流行跑步減肥，如果你要勸某位朋友試用此招兒，可說：
You're plump; try and
run off all those excess
pounds.（你有些胖，要跑步減減肥。）
