報道中的defendants' pen就是“被告席”,這里著重講一下“pen”。pen除表示我們?nèi)粘K姷摹颁摴P”外,還有一層意思指a fenced
enclosure for animals(圈養(yǎng)牲畜的圍欄),如:a pen of
sheep(一欄羊),由此,pen可引申為“監(jiān)禁”或“監(jiān)獄”。在報道中,pen表示“把被告席位隔開的圍欄”。
另外,pen也可做動詞用,指“把…關(guān)在欄中;禁錮”,其過去分詞有兩種形式“penned”或“pent”,舉兩個例子:The sheep have to
be penned every night.(羊群每晚都得關(guān)進圈里。)
The desire to travel has been pent up for the last two
years.(近兩年來心中老是憋著想出門旅行的愿望。)
