Trying to stay
afloat in an industry battered by soaring fuel costs
and low-fare competition, American Airlines is exploring more profitable
international routes where competition is less intense and launching
cost-cutting programmes. One such strategy was its Sunday launch of daily
non-stop flights to China.
每日直航的政策可以幫助美國航空公司保持有利的競爭地位,由此afloat可以解釋為:free or out of difficulty, especially
financial difficulty(順利的,免受經濟困難的)。 The firm couldn't keep the business
afloat during the recession.(在經濟衰退期間, 這家公司不能順利維持業(yè)務。)
The ship was listing badly but still kept afloat.
There' s a story afloat
that he' ll resign.( 有傳聞說他要辭職。)
