journalist and leading critic of Syria's hold over Lebanon died in a car
bombing Thursday, and the opposition immediately blamed Syria for an
assassination that came during a series of parliamentary elections that
could end Damascus' control of the legislature.
Syria denied any involvement in the attack on Samir Kassir,
slain by a bomb placed under the driver's seat of his
car.
Anti-Syrian opposition leaders called for a general strike Friday to
protest the killing, carried out even as an international team was
investigating the February murder of former Premier Rafik Hariri, whose
death led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops after nearly three decades in
Lebanon.

據(jù)悉，卡西爾是黎巴嫩《白天報(bào)》著名記者兼評(píng)論家，曾撰寫(xiě)了許多關(guān)于維護(hù)黎巴嫩主權(quán)、要求結(jié)束敘利亞在黎駐軍的重要文章。消息傳出后，美國(guó)國(guó)務(wù)卿賴斯和歐盟負(fù)責(zé)外交與安全政策的高級(jí)代表索拉納一致譴責(zé)此次暗殺事件。賴斯認(rèn)為暗殺目的顯然是想恐嚇參加大選的黎巴嫩選民。
